Musicmatic

This was a really fun project! See below for my process from beginning to end. At the bottom of the page there is an interactive prototype using InVision. Click here to go to InVision where you can actually try it on your device (iPhone X recommended). Enjoy!

PROJECT GOALS

  1. Design a native iPhone app that displays bands/artists coming to a user's town.
  2. Present the artist a user selects.
  3. Present the day of the concert and venue.
  4. Give users the ability to play a song by the artist.
  5. Give users the ability to like and share the concert.
  6. Show hashtags associated to the artist.
  7. Ability for a user to share the concert with friends or social media.

HYPOTHETICAL USER PROBLEMS

  1. It's difficult to know when users' favorite artists are playing local shows.
  2. It's difficult to know when my friends are going to concerts in our area.
  3. It's difficult to share concert information with my friends and buy tickets together.

RESEARCH

First, I looked outward before I could make assumptions and begin. There are many apps in the same space, but two that stood out were Spotify and Soundcloud.

PERSONAS

The provided age range was 16-25, but I wanted to get a deeper understanding of who the users are from an emotional, professional, and personal standpoint.

USER JOURNEY

Next, I sketched out a simple user journey to put myself in the users shoes. This allowed me to understand where tradeoff's needed to be made and see where the requested features fit best.

WIREFRAMES

Next, I started wire-framing basic ideas, taking cues from my research and user journey.

Assumptions I made were:

  1. User accepted or enabled location services.
  2. A user account was created.
  3. The user connected social their media accounts.

BRAND & STYLE

I took cues from apps widely used by Millennials. Some common threads I identified were large imagery, bright colors, simple UI and modern typography.

VISUAL DESIGN

This is where it all comes together. Based on my research, I felt like the bright pink key color and simple/clean UI was most relatable to the age group that this app serves. I also integrated a simple "wave" like pattern in the header, playing off the idea of sound waves. It also pay's homage to the band Joy Division.

INVISION PROTOTYPE

This is where it really came alive! Once the visual design was in motion, I pressure tested and tweaked interaction design and transitions. It also allowed me to get some real time feedback from my wife Lindsay. Overall, I'm pretty happy with where this ended up!

Feel free to try right here, or for the best experience view the prototype on InVision.

*To note, some interactions like the music player portion serve as just an idea of how it could look and feel. InVision has some limitations with states and behaviors.

ARTIST DASHBOARD

On the other side of the experience, artists can log in as their band to check on ticket sales, see how their social presence is performing, and see upcoming shows with detailed information. They can also manage what content gets pushed to their public profile like images, video, and related articles. This is their one stop shop to manage the band.
